About

The Robo-Challenge workshop is based on materials from the IBM Robo-Challenge competition. A yearly challenge run for year 5 and 6 students in the greater London area. The intention of this workshop is to integrate these outstanding resources within the Digital Schoolhouse educational framework and allow more students to be able to benefit from them. This workshop is based around a simulated robotics training program, where pupils need to gain the skills to program an electronic amphibious vehicle to get to the airport to report crucial knowledge about global warming back to the United Nations Climate Change Action Summit. It begins with an unplugged activity introducing the idea of computers needing precise instructions. This is followed by another unplugged activity which explores programming an ‘emotional’ robot with a more structured language. The next section moves onto teaching students about how to program the Lego Mindstorms EV3 and then through 4 challenges demonstrate their programming skills and understanding. The workshop ends with students completing the mission to get their electronic amphibious vehicle to the airport safely while assisting fellow scientists with collecting rubbish which is polluting the habitat of animals in the Arctic.
