Top 5 moments from DSH Super Smash Bros. Ultimate regional qualifiers

Author: Laura Martin, Comms and Programme Manager

For a while now, we’ve been deprived of punchy play in the Smash arena, but after a year of waiting for the pandemic to subside and for schools to resume some sort of normality, students have certainly delivered. They’ve shown talent, tenacity and oodles of sportsmanship in our first set of qualifying events. It really is, all to play for.

Over the course of 8 individual regional qualifier events, teams have battled it out for a place in the semi-finals - just one step closer to that glittering hexagonal beacon that is the Gfinity esports arena to claim the title of UK Esports Champions of the Digital Schoolhouse Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Team Battle 2022.

This is just the start of their journey. But while we wait in anticipation for our champions to reveal themselves, I’ve reflected on what’s been deemed by one of our teachers as quite simply, a ‘brilliantly bonkers’ time. Here’s my Top 5 moments of the regional qualifiers.

5. Introducing classrooms to the brave new world of Discord (and ranking our favourite crisps at lunchtime)

p.s. Space Raiders came out top

4. A school hiring this venue when the school wifi wouldn't work

3. Meeting new schools and colleges

2. Hearing all our talented shoutcasters

1. Receiving this email

"The students really enjoyed [the event]. One Year 10 student turned to me at the end of the day and said “this has been the best day in all of my school life”"

Next, we're looking forward our semi-finals. The South event is taking place on Wednesday 16 March at Staffordshire University Digital Institute - London, and the North event is taking place on Friday 18 March at HOST Salford. From here, our top 4 teams will head to the grand final at Gfinity's esports arena to battle it out for the title of UK Esports Champion.
