Part-Baked Games: Chefs Edition: A parent’s guide to computing at home

Author: Estelle Ashman, curriculum content developer

Following on from last week’s workshop, Machine Code Mario, this week’s workshop in our computing at home teaching series is Part-Baked Games: Chefs Edition, a workshop that will introduce your children to creating a paper prototype for their own Gigantosaurus themed game. You do not need a copy of Gigantosaurus to complete this workshop.

A prototype is a version of something that does not have all the features it will have when it is complete; a prototype can be designed on paper or digitally.

This workshop is perfect for ages 5 -14 years.

Part 1 of the workshop will introduce your little gamers to the concept of prototyping using BAFTA’s Young Game Designer competition resources.

·        To begin, your child will use BAFTA’s idea generator to give them the features that their game must include.

·        With these criteria in mind, Estelle will walk your child through the process of creating a paper prototype for their game using Gigantosaurus assets provided by Outright Games (assets are all the pictures, sound effects and music that will be used in the game).

Part 2 of the workshop will teach your child how to compare their paper prototype with the released version of the game and make improvements to their prototype.

·        With their paper prototype completed, your child will watch a play through of Outright Games’ Gigantosaurus (if you have a copy of the game, your child could play along!).

·        They will then identify features that they liked from the released version and Estelle will explain how they could incorporate these features into their prototype.

·        The workshop will conclude with your child making improvements to their prototype by adding their chosen features.
