It isn’t the silence of a focused classroom; it is the heavy, stagnant silence of a student who has already decided a door is closed to them.

Years ago, while teaching in an Inner London Secondary school, I encountered this silence in its most profound form. Our school, like many, was streamed by ability. Inevitably, the Extension Band mirrored the most affluent demographics of the area. Conversely, the Support Group held our highest concentration of SEND students and those from lower socioeconomic backgrounds.

When I stood before a Year 9 Upper Band mixed ability group to promote our Sail France residential trip, an opportunity backed by Pupil Premium funding to ensure cost was no barrier, I expected a forest of raised hands. Instead, I was met with blank stares. When I pressed for a reason, a student finally spoke with a devastating matter-of-factness:

“Miss, you’re speaking to the wrong class. This trip isn’t meant for students like us. That’s for the Extension Band.”

Despite the available funding and our best intentions, a social divide had calcified. These students didn't just lack the money; they lacked the sense of belonging. This encounter, and what it represents, remains the driving force behind Digital Schoolhouse. It serves as a stark reminder that if an opportunity is not embedded into the fabric of a child’s daily life, they will write themselves out of the narrative before they even begin.

Led by Simon Peyton-Jones and Simon Humphreys the group sat down together to answer the very aspirational question “If the DfE introduced Computer Science onto the school curriculum tomorrow, what should that curriculum contain?”. That work became a somewhat extensive Body of Knowledge document. Which then became one of my source materials for completely revamping my own school curriculum again. By 2011 my school was delivering a Key Stage 3 computing curriculum that integrated the principles of computer science, digital skills and digital creativity.

My next challenge was to work out how we can apply the same innovation to Key Stage 3 assessment techniques. Some like me, simply jumped for joy. I had free reign to continue to innovate. And for me, this innovation wasn’t just in subject content but also pedagogy. It’s when my play-based learning approach to teaching computing really began to pick up speed. Other schools reacted differently. Some teachers, buried their head in the sand, awaiting the next decision which would see a reversal of the news. And in some cases, unfortunately, IT teachers were made redundant; departments shrunk or eradicated all together.

Amongst this, another piece of work began. Writing the National Curriculum Programmes of Study. The DfE approached BCS and CAS to draft the programmes of study. I was one of the fortunate individuals that formed part of the working group that came together to draft the Programmes of Study. It wasn’t an easy task, and there was plenty of debate. But fundamentally what stuck was a focus on the key underlying discipline of Computer Science, something that was more timeless than the passing trends of technology. If I was able to go back, what would I change? I’d have fought harder for the Programmes of Study to include a greater emphasis on the Digital Creativity aspects of the subject. I lost this argument at the time though, mostly I think because there was a need to move away from anything that remotely resembled the ‘terrible ICT curriculum’ that had just been removed. Computer Science was a rigorous scientific discipline not a ‘soft subject’ that could be ignored as it was previously, it was essential to our future, and we needed everyone to recognise that. We needed everyone to understand the fundamentals of programming.

Over two thirds of the teachers still teaching the subject didn’t have the subject knowledge required to do so. So, a concerted effort of upskilling a nation of teachers began. It was in this space that Ukie was awarded grant funding by the GLA’s Mayor of London’s Schools Excellence Fund. During Boris Johnson’s time as Mayor of London, he released funding that enabled Ukie to employ me and create the Digital Schoolhouse programme.

Having full creative freedom over the development of a model was fun, exciting, challenging and refreshing. I had free reign to take stock of all the academic expertise and my own practitioner research. It gave me time to dive deeper into what had worked whilst I was teaching and why. It is during these early years that I wrote my book with Ian Livingstone, “Creative Computing and the Power of Play” and within it for the first time set down what a play-based learning approach to teaching the computing curriculum looks like.

I developed our workshop resources; “Get with the Algo-rhythm” later followed by “Just Dance with the Algorithm” which both set out to show how you can use dancing to teach algorithms and programming. Resources like “Surprise Stories” taught programming through storytelling; and workshops such as “Beautiful Numbers” and “Crazy Graphics” combined mathematics, art and computer science into one wholistic approach. Through my next book “How to Raise a Tech Genius” I took our playful unplugged activities and made them accessible for parents. Whether its teaching sorting algorithms by organising your sock drawer, story time before bed, tackling a jigsaw puzzle together as a family or learning about processing paradigms through cooking the evening meal. The book set out to help parents use everyday activities to learn computer science concepts together with their children.

We spark creativity and innovation, provide a sense of excitement, sprinkled with playful enthusiasm through our work and curriculum delivery.

Additional challenges impact teachers globally in today’s world. Some schools don’t have reliable internet access, others do not have a full set of devices, if they have any at all. In this varying climate how can we ensure equal access to high-quality provision for students everywhere, regardless of where they are born. That question is perhaps too big for us to tackle alone. But we can attempt to make a start. That’s why we teamed up with Macmillan Education to develop the “Max Computing” series. It’s a curriculum for grades 1 to 9 that enables all teachers, regardless of expertise or access to hardware to teach computer science and digital skills. It combines the best of Digital Schoolhouse delivered in a way that is accessible for everyone.

It’s been quite a journey. 11 years ago today I would have been busy teaching a lesson in my diverse Inner London secondary school using machines that were at least 3 years out of date. Today, I have the privilege of sitting in the sun with a decent laptop writing this reflection. As I steer Digital Schoolhouse towards a bright future, I try to make sure that I never lose sight of where we began and how we got here. It sheds light on just how far we still have to go.

So, to start, let's nail down what the three main different ones mean:

Play-Based Learning - Refers to learners constructing knowledge as they explore, experiment, discover and solve problems in playful and unique ways.

Game-Based Learning - Refers to using games (including video games) to support teaching and learning.

Gamification - This is about using ‘elements’ derived from video game design, which are then deployed in a variety of contexts, rather than about using individual video games.

Each can be a powerful tool in any classroom, whether used in combination or with each other, however, each has different ways they engage and educate:

Play-based Learning uses the power of play to teach. Video games may feature as part of this, though it has a much broader application than that. For example, I have previously taught programming through dance, and I've 'built' a computer in my classroom using pupils as components, the possibilities are endless and any teacher knows, that if you make learning fun and playful, engagement and retention of knowledge improve exponentially.

In my opinion, Play-Based Learning sits in a broader space than Game-Based Learning; which might indeed be seen as a form of Play-Based Learning. So what is Game-Based Learning?

Game-Based Learning simulates real-world environments, adding context for pupils and naturally requiring them to engage in problem-solving. We all know that games resonate with children and are a contextual hub for learning, after all, who hasn’t learnt a decent amount about budgeting from playing Monopoly? Playing a game requires problem-solving, decision-making, intuitive learning, trial and error, logic, analysis, management, communication, risk-taking, planning, resource management and computational thinking. Not a bad list eh? If you could fit all of that learning into an hour at school you would be delighted, games do that and have children begging to play them all over again. Video games are a broad canvas across which pupils can learn a huge range of skills. Games like Minecraft stimulate the imagination and naturally promote creativity, curiosity, learning, concentration and community. Games also give the player continuous assessment and allow failure in a safe environment – and who would not rather that than a spelling or maths test where everyone is checking if you passed or not?

Gamification aims to bring game-mechanic style elements into the classroom. This can include things such as ‘scoring to level up’. No actual games have to be played for gamification to be utilised, for example, apps like Class Dojo can be used to gamify behaviour management, getting pupils to win and lose points based on their choices.

Whereas Play-Based Learning uses your internal instincts for curiosity, playfulness and imagination, Gamification uses external rewards and triggers. Gamification when done well can really work as a method of engaging children with their learning. However, the danger with gamification is that people can apply the mechanics without the supporting narrative and context. this way, it becomes somewhat 'artificial' and as it is a method that lies on extrinsic motivation, before long the students see through it and motivation and engagement levels can drop.

We may have even said it sometimes in our more frustrated moments, “All kids want to do these days is play video games.” What we should be asking is “Why? What draws children to them? What keeps them motivated to play and get better at them?”

Video games use Play-Based Learning, Game-Based Learning and Gamification to make learning their game and applying those learnt skills as engaging and joyful an experience as possible. They have made learning into play. And surely that is a lesson we can learn as teachers.

Video games combine a huge raft of factors to create engaging and captivating experiences that can be a powerful medium for learning. These include, but are not limited to:

Joyful experiences

Narrative design

Interactive/immersive storytelling

Intrinsic motivation

Freedom to fail and try again

Multi-sensory input

Contextual value

Fusion of arts, science, mathematics, literature…

Creative problem-solving, strategic thinking, logical reasoning and more.

Agency and control

Innovative ideas

Accessibility and inclusivity

It's because they combine all these and a number of other factors in a way that is seamless, separating out one strand or aspect limits the effectiveness of the experience.

Gameplay is the treatment of topics and ideas as rules, actions, decisions and consequences, rather than as content to be communicated. Video games allow learners to engage with topics and ideas through interaction and simulation, rather than through the conventional materials and formats of schooling.

They are the polar opposite of the Victorian model of a teacher standing at a blackboard getting children to learn by rote. Video games have made learning play. It’s time we learned from them, and made education the same.

No one teaches us how to play (unless of course you consider the organised sport and wider games with rules arena, but more on that later). We simply just do it, and by doing so we learn about the world around us. Babies play, and through their play, they explore and make important discoveries, i.e. what is edible and what isn't (although as adults we may not always agree with them). Older children in the playground will learn a lot about social interaction and how to deal with a range of moral and ethical dilemmas. It's how they instinctively learn.

Play is at the heart of everything children do - from 'messing around', role play, playing with blocks, puzzles, and dolls to video games. And it’s important, it allows us to unwind, destress, and have fun. Far from being a waste of time, as it was often labelled in the past, it is an activity worth devoting time to. We know play has deeper and more tangible cognitive benefits, and if children do it naturally, why would we not structure our learning around it?

Whether it’s the child that used Minecraft to turn their computer into a drinks machine or the next Emma Raducanu – children continue to use playful ways to interact with their environment and learn.

This self-directed mastery of skills is developed voluntarily over time; with its primary purpose being fun. We’ve spent so long as educators looking for ways to engage and motivate learners and the answer was in front of us all along. The enjoyment derived from playful activity motivates the learner to improve their skills over time so that they can get better at playing. They teach themselves so that they can get better at playing their game, and, after all, which teacher wouldn’t want a class that motivates and challenges itself?

And the thing is, we don’t ever stop learning that way. At least not instinctively. It's just that the education system has a way of stripping that out as you get older. Playtime is left for the playground while the serious business of learning remains in the classroom. The consequence is that you often won’t see that same self-directed drive and motivation in our classrooms.
