Lead teachers boot-up for the next academic year as a certified Schoolhouse

Author: Laura.Martin

As the Summer holidays draw closer, it’s that time of year for the annual Digital Schoolhouse Summer Boot Up Camp: an experience designed to prepare our ingenious lead teacher community for the academic year ahead as a certified Schoolhouse.

Throughout May, our team travelled across the country to visit some of the most inspiring & passionate teachers in Computing, Science and other disciplines. This week, those selected joined our experienced lead teachers for a full three days of networking, continued professional development and unplugged activities, delivered by the team and special guests.

With a total of 54 Schoolhouses going forward on the programme in September 2019, this event was our biggest yet. Here's just a few of the activities we got up to over the last few days.

Induction Day - 25 June

Here at Ukie's HQ, our brand new lead teachers joined us for a programme induction: to gain insight into what we do, our education philosophy (publication coming soon!) and how to deliver the programme in their locality. Guest speakers included Paul Curzon (CS4FN & Queen Mary's University London) who delivered a session on Teaching Computational Thinking and the theory behind 'unplugged' activities, 'Semantic Waves'. Lead Teacher and NCCE facilitator, Jane Adamson (Monkwearmouth Academy), also led a session on 'Delivering effective CPD'.

Development Day & Studio Tours - 26 June

At Escape Studios in High Holborn, both new and experienced lead teachers met for the first time in a mammoth speed meet, which also presented teachers with the opportunity to get to know other Schoolhouses within their geographical cluster. In addition, I led a session on maximising their Computing workshops & key marketing activity throughout the year, to encourage bookings and promote their community profile. Estelle also introduced the group to brand new resources (also coming soon!). Detective Constable, Peter Chaffey, from South East Regional Cyber Crime Unit then led an engaging session on Computer Misuse. With all this going on, teachers also participated in exclusive studio tours hosted by Escape throughout the day.

Naturally, the day was rounded off nicely by a social in the sunshine at a nearby pub.

Reflections & DSH Lead Teacher Awards - 27 June

Our final day back at Ukie HQ, saw experienced lead teachers reflect upon the academic year as a Schoolhouse; sharing successes and challenges alike. We also hosted our second  DSH Lead Teacher Awards to showcase teachers' achievements in 2018-2019. Our winners were:

We're thrilled to have so many like-minded and passionate teachers on board the programme, both committed and empowered to inspire the next generation and contributing in their own way to the digital skills shortage.

There’s certainly a growing sense of excitement amongst our community and we can’t wait to see what the next year brings…
